Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May to remember the soldiers who gave their lives in service of their country. All (non-essential) government offices and banks are closed. Most nannies are allowed the day off with regualr compensation.
The New York State Legislature passed the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, making New York the first state in the nation to provide new standards of worker protections for more than 200,000 employees in an industry which has gone unregulated for decades. Part of that law gives nannies six paid holidays, including Memorial Day.
Do you have today off as a paid holiday? How many paid holidays do you get each year?
In my work agreement it states that I will receive 4 federal holidays each yr: July 4th, Christmas, New Years, and Thanksgiving. This is because my employers are physicians and sometimes work on holidays. In reality I find I have more holidays off each yr, but it depends on my employers' schedules. Overall, they are very generous with the amount of vacation and personal leave I get, so this is not an issue for me, that I may receive fewer federal holidays than the norm.
ReplyDeleteI get nine holidays in my work agreement but I typically get more. And if I work a pseudo holiday (like Black Friday) I get off very early. If the parents come home, I'm free to go, paid.

I do have today off paid! I have New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving/Day After and sometimes 1/2 day before/always Christmas Day/Day after.
Suzanne
Yes, I get Memorial Day paid. I also get New Years, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving & Christmas.
Amanda
I have 8 paid holidays; new years day, memorial day, 4th of July, labor day, thanksgiving day and the day after, Christmas eve and Christmas day. But I am working at my babysitting rate today.
Andrea
I get 10 Paid Holidays- New Year's Day, MLK Day, President's Day, Good Friday, Mem. Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day After Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.
Sarah
yup! I have 6 paid holidays a year.
Desiree
none :( if don't work, I don't get paid.
Pam
Yes, I do have Mem. Day off as a paid holiday (only because both parents who are in the medical field have the day off). My days off depend on when the parents have the day off. Usually Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year's Day. Others, as they find out they will be off.

Lots of military employers in my life. Yes, off and paid. I always get a guaranteed minimum 40 hour paycheck a week, have made that a priority for many years now.
Stephanie
There are (at least) 8 federal holidays listed off as paid holidays in my contract but I get off early many days that aren't listed like Black Friday or if I were to work Christmas Eve. I get tons of paid vacation days whenever they travel without me. I've found most employers very generous with this with me.

I get 8 paid holidays
ReplyDeleteI don't get paid holidays off, nor did I realize there was a law passed in NY for such. Ugh. I am a new nanny + clearly I didn't know what I was doing ~
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard Maria Yvonee, unless someone tells you how could you know? Most nannies find jobs online and even if you worked with a great agency, in the end you have to negotiate for yourself. It's hard 'cause nannies are so nice and we aren't exactly money grubbers. No one works in child care to be rich. Negotiating is the hardest part of the job for me.
ReplyDeleteI work in california for someone who works as an employee of a new york company. I get any paid holiday she gets, and I believe there are 9. However since I'm not full time, I often don't work on mondays and the other nanny tends to get those days of holiday pay.
ReplyDeleteI do wish I was given pay when they leave town and I have no work, because its often on short notice. They are good to me though, and I do end up with extra hours. Its just hard to plan not getting paid for 3 weeks.
